Location
We were out in a local park where the dogs played in piles of leaves, jumping in and out and chasing each other.Time
We were out for our afternoon walk, taking an unusual route into the park.Lighting
I love using natural backlight, especially with animals. It's not always easy to position them right, but it pays off! I like to use light filtering through trees to create a soft look.Equipment
This photo was shot with my Canon EOS 6D and my favorite prime lens to date, the Canon 85mm f1.8Inspiration
Watching the dogs jump around and the leaves fly and being stuck to their fur inspired me to put a leaf on Herbies head. Leaves were all over the place, but we had to stop and position him to have the time to take a shot.Editing
I like to do as little post processing as possible. Besides the usual color/contrast adjustments that come with RAW, I added a bit of a stronger vignette to strengthen the idea that the photo was taken on a little lighting between trees. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 85 f1.8 with me, it's the lens I mostly use. I also use the Canon 200mm f2.8 prime lens for action shots of dogs, and sometimes I use my Sigma 35mm f1.4. I'm still getting used to that focal length. Aside from those lenses and my camera, the Canon EOS 6D, I always pack some treats and toys for the dogs. Don't forget to pay your models ;)Feedback
If you work with animals, try to make it simple and fun. Lots of treats and breaks for playing keep a dog happy and engaged. Be flexible in your plans, sometimes the dog just doesn't like your ideas - maybe whatever they are offering is something you didn't think about, and you even like it better? Get on the dogs' eye level to create an intimate image and pull in the viewer. And most importantly, have fun!
