Behind The Lens

Location

This picture is token during a trip to Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel in the Azores. I was amazed by the unpredictable weather. It had been sunny the whole day when it unexpectedly became dark without raining.

Time

I always try to go out on a photo walk while traveling. I try to do it at the end of the day when the sun goes down but before it gets dark, this is not very popular since my girlfriend see this time as dinner time. This day I had luck convincing her. The time was around seven in the afternoon.

Lighting

This particular day had been clear and very sunny and the light has been harsh. The light became a lot softer during my photo walk but all suddenly the weather became stormy and the light very soft and easy to handle letting me use 9.0 in aperture with 1/1250 in speed, holding my ISO down in 400. I never had the opportunity to shoot in this lighting conditions and I appreciated a lot.

Equipment

This time I had my Nikon d7000, the lens was a Nikkor 10-24mm. Nothing else.

Inspiration

My inspiration was the coastline, the contrast between the modern and the old part of the town and definitely the lighting and the weather conditions.

Editing

I did som basic post work in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

At that time I only had the Nikon d7000, a 10-24mm lens, a 35mm and a 50mm.

Feedback

If you visit Ponta Delgada, try to do your photo walk during the golden hours and be prepared to handle any kind of lighting even during this hours. Try to enjoy all the opportunities the light and the monochromatic, very graphical buildings at the old part of town gives you.
