Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was a result of a varsity assignment, I am a design and photography student. This photo was taken in front of my Tv screen as a black background on a glass table.

Time

I am so proud of this image, this photo was taken later at night, as I am the kind of student who leaves everything for the day before the deadline.

Lighting

I love the idea of negative space, I love flat colour, it draws your eye straight to the center of the composition. For lighting however, it was not that simple. I have one LED Video light lighting the camera from the bottom, Set on max power. Then I have 2 LED Spotlights from each side, I did this to create the outline to highlight the shape of the camera.

Equipment

This was shot on my used and abused Nikon D90, with my 18-105 kit lens (I dropped the lens right after this set of photos, it broke) Camera was set on a small bean bag on the glass table. Made use of my 3 LED lights.

Inspiration

This photo is a result of a varsity assignment, the assignment was to capture any of my prized possessions in a new or unusual way. We need to try and create a visual personality. So hey, A camera that can "see" you in a shape of a face?? Kind of grabbing... Well I'd like to think so.

Editing

Yes, Adobe Photoshop was a key part of this photograph, obviously, I converted it to Grey Scale. But the processing was to remove the lights from the shot as it was visible in my raw photograph. The light from the left was only 5cm away from the object in the photograph, likewise on the right, just a tad further away.

In my camera bag

My everyday walk around kit consists of my Nikon D90, Tamron 70-200 f2.8, Nikkor 18-105 kit Lens (now retired/broken) and a nifty little 50mm f1.4 (Vintage lens), I dream of better equipment, but you can capture what ever need with what you need. All you need is your creativity...

Feedback

"Broken Symmetry" is usually beautiful, in my image I call it broken symmetry, it's a symmetrical shape with slight imbalance. Just to create that small amount of interest. Only the top right of the old camera breaks the perfect symmetry. Look for anything that has that kind of characteristic. It will work. But what usually inspires me is: Create for yourself an assignment. And stick to it. or even have a friend to set the assignment for you. this forces you to look at objects and subjects in a new way. Creativity comes with practice and by experimenting.
