Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a car show and parts swap meet in Southern California.

Time

This picture was taken during the very early morning hours around 6:30 AM.

Lighting

The overcast weather provided nice soft lighting overall, which I usually prefer. I also used on-camera flash fill pulled by about 2 or 3 stops.

Equipment

I used my Olympus E-1 DSLR with an 11-22mm lens and FL-50 flash. The shot was handheld 1/30 second at f/2.8

Inspiration

I've always been drawn to subjects that have a lot of texture and detail. Usually things that have rust, peeling paint and dents are my favorite. They have the most character and in essence have a story to tell. On top of that, I'm a lover of cars, especially the classics and muscle cars.

Editing

Photoshop is my choice for post processing. For this image, starting with the RAW file, I did my normal curves, shadows/highlights adjustments and color balance. The cloudy sky was enhanced as well to give better balance between the dark Mercury and the sky

In my camera bag

These days I tend to travel light. I usually carry one Olympus E-M1 body, a couple of lenses, a Nissin i40 flash and a spare battery of two. Presently the lenses I tend to use most often are the 7-14mm 2.8, 12-40mm 2.8, 40-150mm 2.8, and 300mm 4.0

Feedback

Photographing cars is probably what I like to do most. My suggestion is rather than trying to fit a whole car in an image, get close and capture details instead. It's those smaller and finer elements, such as grills, tail lights, badges and hood ornaments that can make for some great subjects.
