Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is the result of an extremely long hike we took last summer on the Mt.Sirente peak in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park near L'Aquila in central Italy, a wonderful place covered by rocky peaks and lush forests at less than 1 hour from the center of the city. The place is known for the great landscapes and for the rare species of flora and wildlife. Wolves, bears, vultures and deers live in the highlands and forests of the park and even if it's really close to the suburbs is usually less crowded by hikers and mountaineers. All these characteristics make the place unique and perfect for both: landscape or wildlife photography.

Time

We reached the top aroud 12:00AM and that was the time we took this shot.

Lighting

Without clear sky conditions and heavy clouds and fogs raising in morning, the lighting was low, muffled and widespread. With not so great colors to show, I opted for a B&W version to exalt mood and poetry of the moment.

Equipment

The shot was taken with a Nikon Coolpix P520 camera, no filters nor other equipment.

Inspiration

Probably the mood of the day, we had a really long ascent in the clouds so we were not so happy to reach the top without seeing at more than 10 meters.. But once on the top the cloudy curtains fell apart and the peaks came into light. A really amazing sight after 25km in a cloudy purgatory!

Editing

I first converted the file into an 8-bit grey scale raster, then I menaged to intensify contrast, sharpness and shadows to let the observer be part of the scene as if he was there with us! minor corrections and disturb reduction were taken in the procedure.

In my camera bag

As always when I move into wilderness, I take with me my camera and a tripod and all the necessary to face adverse climatic conditions. I like to go lightweight, so no unnecessary stuff and lot of willingness to go where there is no signed paths to get lost in yourself and nature in complete safety.

Feedback

We are not used to go out just to take a picture or two to share with the View Bug community or with friends.. The most important part is to go out there to have great experiences! NO matter if you go out in the streets or getting lost in the wilderness, the most profitable photography is the one taken with mind and feelings related to moment you are experiencing. There is always a difference between a tecnically perfect shot and a perfect moment captured in a shot. That is our philosophy and of course that is the main purpose when we go out there with a digital camera!
