Definitely gonna do this when I get to NZ. Water Rats are quite good with this. Did you do it?

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in Rotorua, New Zealand. I had taken very little action shots so wanted to practice capturing the excitement and extreme moment of the rafting.

Time

It was early afternoon, overcast and perfect for photography. I remember the excitement of running from viewing point to viewing point trying to capture that perfect moment and get a good position. Sure tested my fitness as well.

Lighting

It was perfect weather, overcast with filtered sunlight.

Equipment

I shot this image with a Nikon D610, lens 70-300mm.

Inspiration

It was two fold really, one was to practice action photography and the second was that being a bit frightened to do something like this I could actually live it through the lens, watching the faces and screams of the people as they had their experience. It looked so much fun after taking my photos I was tempted to be brave and try it but in the end unfortunately not brave enough.

Editing

The image needed very little processing, I just enhanced hi-lights and a little sharpening.

In my camera bag

I am a bit of a be ready for anything person and carry all my gear with me which is Nikon D610, lenses Nikkor 85mm 1.14G, Nikkor 16-35mm F4, Nikkor 105mm, Nikkor 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 and some filters. It can be a bit of a load to carry but I never want to be in a position of not having the gear I need.

Feedback

As this was my first experience in action photography the best advice I could give would be to use a tripod, or be able to use something to give you a stable platform to take the shot, use continuous shooting mode and a fast shutter speed and adjust your aperture to the type of shot you want.
