Location
The photo was taken at our studio here in beautiful Hunterdon County New Jersey.Time
The shoot was scheduled for the morning of May 30th 2014. We usually try to get an early start when ever we do a "fantasy" make-up...models can spend up to 2 to 3 hours in a make-up chair depending on the theme of the shoot. Mostly fresh flowers delivered to the shoot for her hair though we used some silks as wellLighting
We wanted to use a basic two light set up (background light and a key light with beauty dish) but once we saw how dark the outfit was including the gloves I placed two continuous lights on set to help light up the dark outfit, it really helped to bring out the textures.Equipment
We used our Nikon D4 with the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 lens perched on our 3 Legged Thing Frank Tripod. Key light and background light are our Bowens Gemini series monolights (22" Beauty dish on Key, rigid reflector on background light) with Pocket Wizard Plus III Transceivers. Two Savage Universal Continuous lights in front of the model just off to her sides. Background provided by our sponsor Savage Universal is their #8 Primary Red seamless paper background. Savage Reflector table was used as well.Inspiration
Always wanted to do a "Day of the Dead" shoot even though we have seen images online. I figured we would try to up the game a bit and put our own spin on it by making it bold and almost glamorous. We made sure everyone involved were all on the same page with the concept, pretty fun shoot we did not want to stop...in fact we took the shoot outside for additional shots. Model is singer songwriter Alexa Britt, she had a blast! MUA was Jamie Mencher, she did a great job on make-up and hair.Editing
Had to touch up the make-up here and there in Photoshop. Punched up contrast and clarity for an "edgier" feel. Bit of sharpness (not much needed) Bumped up vibrance and a bit of saturation to make it pop. Had to be careful as too much saturation on an image like this can make it go south real quick.In my camera bag
My favorite camera is my Nikon D4 with my go to lens the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 and my Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 is next to it. Unless it's my day off then my Sigma 180mm f2.8 as I like to shoot insects when I'm not in studio. SB910 flash, a modifier or two and the Pocket Wizard Transceivers. 3LT Frank tripod with the AirHed III head goes with us most places. I keep a pair of light stands in my truck at all time. A tool bag with the regular carry-alongs such as batteries, cables and so on. I also make sure I keep a good stock of business cards in my bag.Feedback
Really just make sure it's well planned. Know who you are working with, a good make-up artist can really make all the difference in a shoot. Same goes for the model, friends are fine but using someone with experience can make the session run a lot smoothly and again make sure to explain the concept clearly to everyone involved so everyone is on the same page. Don't be afraid to take suggestions from the crew, we've had ideas from models and or stylist that completely turned the shoot around or gave the shoot a little special something.
