Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at sunrise on a ridge outside of Spearfish, SD

Time

I was up at about 4am on a crisp fall morning in order to make the hour drive to Spearfish and get set up before sunrise.

Lighting

I got instructions on how to shoot silhouettes by no other than Rick Sammon! In 2012 I attended the Black Hills Photo Shootout where Rick Sammon was the featured speaker. He attended an outing the following morning and I stuck to him like glue! He was kind and generous with his advice and I have become sort of hooked on silhouettes. I am a believer in taking every opportunity to learn from master photographers and encourage others not to be shy and ask for advice!!! Most photographers are more than willing to share their passion.

Equipment

This photo was taken on a Canon 50D with a 55-250mm lens on a tripod.

Inspiration

The sky turned a beautiful shade of orange for a brief time, so I fired off as many shots as I could. This rider, Kelsie Dellos, is particularly photogenic with beautiful long hair that blows in the wind.

Editing

In post processing I cloned out some dust spots, did a touch of selective sharpening and pushed the saturation.

In my camera bag

I like to shoot nature, so I usually have a zoom lens and a macro lens in my bag, and a Cannon 15-85mm lens on my camera. I carry a ND filter and a circular polarizer, lens cloths, extra batteries, a notebook and pen, my cell phone, and a wee bit 'o chocolate.

Feedback

Be on location early in order to find the best spot to set up before sunrise. Shoot with as fast of a shutter speed as you can and expose for the highlights. Try to capturer bent legs and leave plenty of space in the frame in front of the rider. The most important thing when working with horses is the well being of both the rider and the horse. Make sure you ask repeatedly how both are doing and be respectful of when they need to stop. Look for intimate moments between the rider and horse between runs. Those are often my favorite shots.
