This photo was taken several years ago when I attended a photography clinic in South Dakota. Rick Sammon had been a guest speaker the night before and decided to go along on this shoot. He announced to the group that he was available for questions and to help out if needed. I took full advantage of his generous offer and placed myself right next to him during the shoot. He offered me numerous tips and was extremely helpful.Time
We met at the shoot sight an hour before sunrise, about 5am. We walked up a nice hillside and as soon as the sun started to rise, we started shooting.Lighting
I knew I wanted to capture the sun rising right behind the rider. As her hat started to fly off her head, I started shooting like mad, trained on the rider, just hoping to capture something good. I was so pleased to return home and find a nearly perfect frame with the sun at the hoof, the dog between the horse's legs, and the hat flying behind.Equipment
I shot with a second hand canon 50d and a 55-250 kit lens. This shot is a great example of not needing fancy gear, but instead making sure that settings and technique are good.Inspiration
I love horses and jumped at the opportunity to shoot these horses at dawn. Having Rick Sammon at the shoot was a unexpected but SERIOUS plus!Editing
I did minimal post processing on this shot other than cropping and perhaps some noise reduction. In my camera bag
Since shooting this photo, I have upgraded gear. I now shoot with a Cannon 7d mark 2 and nearly always have a my Cannon 70-300 4-5.6 L lens on camera. I also carry a Canon 100mm macro and a Canon 15-85mm. I am using a tripod more and more as I get older.Feedback
Although this shoot was part of a workshop, I did a lot of reading and video watching prior to the shoot as I know that sometimes workshops can get a bit chaotic. I'm glad I did as the instructor, who was awesome, had a lot of participants to get around to. I think the take away here is to be as prepared as you can when shooting something new and never be too shy to scoot in next to a photographer you admire.
