This photo was shot in Phuket, Thailand at the famous Tiger Kingdom tiger sanctuary. I was not sure if I would be able to take my own photos, but brought my trusty Canon just in case. I'm glad I did. In addition to getting to be up close with these wonderful creatures, I was also able to capture some amazing shots.Time
It was a rainy afternoon and I was a little concerned about the shooting conditions. Luckily, a good portion of the sanctuary was enclosed and allowed for a better photographic experience.Lighting
I had taken a few test shots and noticed that there was a slight orange glow from the lights overhead that I wasn't crazy about. After a few minutes of maneuvering around trying to find a good angle, I stumbled upon this shot. I noticed I was able to balance the lighting effects with the help of some natural light in the background. In the end the orange lights really brought out the colors in the tiger's fur.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon T5i with a standard EF-S 18-55mm STM kit lens. No other equipment was used. This is a shining example of how you don't need an expensive body and lens to still take amazing photos.Inspiration
This was my first trip to Thailand and I really wanted to increase the quality of my vacation photos. It is always easy to just snap a picture, but I wanted the photos from this trip to fully embody the adventure and mystical ambiance of the Thai culture. Rather than boring my friends with lengthy explanations about how to interpret my photos and convey how wonderful the trip was, I wanted these shots to tell the story themselves.Editing
I do typically apply post processing to any photos that I deem are "worthy of the wall". My go-to program is Adobe Lightroom due to its versatility and plethora of features. This particular photo required some slight sharpening, minor color adjustment and some exposure correction to balance out the foreground and the background. As favorite final touch on most of my photos, I added an ever so slight amount of vignetting around the edge.In my camera bag
Being new to the DSLR world, my kit typically contains all of my equipment since I only possess a limited amount as of yet. If packing for a specific occasion I will usually pack based on capability. I will always have my Canon 18-55mm kit lens for standard portrait shots and my Canon 55-250mm kit lens for telephoto work, a makeshift macro and creating a nice blown out background for portrait photography. To save some space in my bag I will also carry a GoPro Hero 4 Black just in case I need a super wide angle option.Feedback
Thailand is one of the few places on earth that you can readily and easily get up close to these amazingly large cats. It is a much more engaging and rich photographic experience to actually be able to touch the animals rather than just shooting through glass at a local zoo. You really get a sense of the power, intelligence and raw beauty of nature by directly observing and interacting with it.
