Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at my studio in Crystal Lake, Illinois. I am self taught and have only been in business for two years. It has been an incredible journey and still cannot believe that this is my "day job".

Time

This image was taken a little after 1p.m in the afternoon My my favorite light in the studio is from 10-2 and that is when I schedule all of my sessions.

Lighting

I wanted the dancer to be the focus so the window light was purposefully blown out. There are other windows to the right behind dancer but otherwise this is all natural light. Thus far I shoot natural light but control it with modifiers and v-flats. For this specific room I hardly ever use modifiers because of the light to the right and behind me from windows.

Equipment

I shoot with a Nikon D810 and my beloved Sigma ART 50. ISO 800 f/2.8 1/500th

Inspiration

I've recently found a passion for fine art portraiture and this was a vision I have had since I first signed the lease to my studio a year and a half ago.

Editing

I did basic levels manipulation and copied the right side, and flipped it to the other for symmetry. The original shows the double windows and I wanted the eyes drawn to the dancer.

In my camera bag

My go-bag is my 810, my ART 50, and my 105mm. I also always have a flash and a set of eneloop batteries beside the arsenal of clamps, cf cards, lenspens, and other miscellaneous goods I'd never be caught without!

Feedback

Ignore your in camera meter and expose for the skin.
