Location
We live in Canmore, Alberta and decided to head to Banff, which is located just west of us. This photo was taken at the Cascade Pond in Banff National Park. There are many photo opportunities in Banff but Cascade Ponds was calling us this particular day.Time
I am always amazed when an opportunity just presents itself. This photo was taken early in the morning, 5:35 am, to be exact, and there aren't any guarantees, in the mountains, as to what the sky will gift you each day.Lighting
When the sun starts it ascent over the horizon the colours are softer in the sky and the forthcoming light changes shadows and hues on the landscape. Deciding what result you wish to achieve will determine when you click the shutter. Early morning shooting, in the Bow Valley, often offers you mirror-like still water so reflections are crisp and clear.Equipment
The camera I use is a Pentax kx (I have to say I love this camera); the lens I used is a Pentax 18-55, f/3.5-5.6; the tripod is a Promaster Carbon Fibre with a Manfrotto ball head.Inspiration
This photo captures much of what I love about the mountains in the morning. The tranquility of the day that starts out with amazing paint strokes of colour, the glassy stillness of the pond and the majesty of the mountains standing guard over the valley. I was fortunate to be here at this time to capture the morning and have the natural framing supplied by nature.Editing
I was starting to experiment with bracketing and this is the result of a three bracket shot post-processed in Photomatix with minor adjustments in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I pack my Pentax kx and my Pentax 18-55 lensFeedback
The best advice I can give for anyone wishing to capture a similar shot is to get up really early in the morning and be out and ready before the sun begins her ascent. Try to have your camera set up, your framing determined, and be ready when the light starts to touch the clouds. Many lighting changes can happen quickly once the sun starts to rise, be ready and you will be rewarded.
