What a beautiful image you have created. My wife and I visited Banff and Kananasksis Country for the first time this past summer and fell in love with the area. Congratulations on your photo.

Location
This was taken along the Bow River in Banff National Park in Canada.Time
It was in mid September in late afternoon.Lighting
I was attracted to the scene by the many layers of texture & color. The late afternoon sun lighting up the golden foliage along the distant waterways and reflected in the Bow River was very dramatic. Most of the day, the sun had been obscured by clouds, so light really called to me.Equipment
I used my Nikon D600 with a 24-120mm zoom, handheld.Inspiration
I had never been to Banff before, so we were just exploring. When we stopped at this spot, I could see the potential for a beautiful image, but I had to overcome a few physical obstacles to get an unobstructed view. It was worth it!Editing
Initially, I made contrast and saturation adjustments from RAW, then used Nik Colorefex Pro to help bring out detail and also increase the warmth in the sky to enhance the already existing warmth of the sun.In my camera bag
I usually travel pretty light, so often carry just my camera and lens, extra cards & batteries, ND filters, a polarizer, lens cloths, a rain cover. If I will be shooting in low light or with a larger lens, I'll have my tripod.Feedback
It's really helpful to scout an area you are visiting by first looking at images others have taken in those locations to give you an idea of scenes you don't want to miss. Then, you need to scout on the ground once you get there. In this case, this scene had been OK in the overcast morning, but it was the arrival of the late afternoon light that really turned it on. So always keep in mind what time of day a particular scene that interests you should be shot to get the effect you want. Always experiment both in the field and once you are home! And have fun!
