Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken at Wombwell Ings not far from my home in Barnsley

Time

This was actually taken on my way back from a 5 mile circular walk at 245 pm and I was just about giving up on inspirational landscape locations when I knelt down by the water's edge and saw some potential so set up my camera and tripod, took out my ten stop filter and set things in motion. I am just glad I walked back the way I came as I would have just passed it by.

Lighting

The shot was taken on a warm afternoon with plenty of rolling clouds so it was a mixed bag

Equipment

I used my Sony Alpha SLT A99 with Tamrom 28-75mm lens set at 28mm with a Hitech 100 10 stop filter mounted onto a Hoya circular polarizing filter, the camera was sat on my Manfrotto 190cf tripod (nice and light). the exif data was ISO 100 f/22 and the shutter speed was 183 seconds fired off by using the remote shutter release controller

Inspiration

The inspiration to capture this image was literally looking at the waters edge from a low angle and seeing how the clouds reflected against the water, plus I was at the right level for composition as there was so much lines to draw the eyes into the middle of the frame e.g the posts in the center are drawn in by both the clouds and the mud line to the far right I was in composer heaven!

Editing

The method I used for post processing this image was in this order.I first had to use auto white balance in Adobe Camera raw as the filter has a green hue to it. Once that was removed I brought the colours back to a natural using the sliders in ACR then opened the image in Photoshop I used Alien Skin Exposure to convert the image to mono then once happy with the contrast and shadows I returned to Photoshop and did a few tweaks using Dodge/Burn for the mud and the clouds to enhance the shot a bit more.

In my camera bag

For most of my photography work I carry my Sony Alpha SLT A99v, I do have it's Grandad, The Sony Alpha A900 but that only comes out for wedding and live gigs, The lenses I carry are Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical, Tamron SP AF 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD, Sigma 12-24mm 4.5-5.6ii DG HSM,Sony SAL30M28 Macro Lens and a Lensbaby Composer Pro with a Sweet 35 lens and 8 and 16mm macro convertor and all this gear can sit on my Manfrotto MT190CXPRO3 190 Carbon Fibre 4 Section Tripod.

Feedback

If you want to capture a similar image first it goes without saying but use a tripod and ensure it is a steady one. to get a good composition You need to asses how the land meets the water and how the cloud wind speed affects the final outcome as if it is too breezy you will just get blurred white so always stare upwards, also check the composition and the drawing in lines as I did. The Rule of Thirds is also very handy to visualize but sometimes rules can be broken. If you do not have a ten stop filter try and get as narrow an f stop as you can, e.g f/25-f32 then adjust the exposure time to as long as you can without overexposing the image (the Sony A99 has live view display so you can instantly how the shot will look before you press the shutter) and finally use a 10 second delay as this will ensure the camera is steady on the tripod before the shutter opens.
