Behind The Lens

Location

I have a home based dental laboratory. This photo was taken in my lab. The back drop was several pieces of folded fabric mounted on a picture frame and propped against the wall.

Time

As I recall, it was on a Saturday morning (before noon anyway). The set-up took longer than one would image, trying to get all the elements to work together and keep the counter clear of cats.

Lighting

This space has no windows so all of the lighting was brought in manually. The over the counter bench light, which is fluorescent, was on. I also used flashlights to add some extra lighting to the bases. One was placed directly on the counter top, the other was on a ladder set up nearby. No flash. Can you guess that I do not have a home based photography studio by now?

Equipment

I did use a tripod for this shot set at counter height. I also used my Nikon Coolpix P510, f3.9, aperature 3.2, ISO-1600.

Inspiration

I was exploring refraction at the time and thought I would give it a shot, so to speak. I did study some similar photos that I found on line and set aside a day to experiment with different backdrops, fabrics and lighting.

Editing

Yes. I did adjust the contrast a bit to brighten the colors and I also cropped the edges slightly. I did not have access to any major programs at the time, and although I now have an old PS installed on my computer now, I don't use it often.

In my camera bag

Always, always have an extra battery in my bag. I also carry a cleaning kit, plastic bags (in the case of rain), and an extra memory card, pre-formatted to whichever camera I happen to be using.

Feedback

Go for it! If you have made it this far in this interview (and are still awake) any area that you have in your house can be an impromptu studio. Use what you have on hand for props and backdrops. You do not need all of the bells and whistles, with fancy lighting equipment or expensive cameras. With just a bit of imagination, you are limitless.
