Behind The Lens

Location

We took this photo at a studio in Burbank, CA

Time

The shoot was from 4pm-8pm

Lighting

I wanted to lit this dramatically and this was intended to be in color. The photo in color is with a greenish yellow tone. It was a 3 light set up. 2 lights where set to the side (continues Arri spotlights) and 1 was set in front (5ft Octodome strobe)

Equipment

5D Mark III 85mm 1.2 Arri 600 Photoflex Triton Flash

Inspiration

This photo is a series called "Minstrel" and it was my buddies idea. The whole series was focused on Equality and Freedom. This is at the end of the shoot when we tossed a watermelon on his face and body.

Editing

In post I literally just changed it to black and white, nothing else was done to it. It's shot as is.

In my camera bag

I usually have the 5D Mark III with a back up of the Mark II 85mm 1.2 50mm 1.2 24-70mm 16-35mm 50mm 1.8 (burnt lens with a lighter) This one is my favorite when I want to capture grain and a vintage look. Link to my other gear http://isaacalvarez.com/gear

Feedback

My biggest advice in general is to constantly shoot. The more you shoot the better your craft will be. Always keep your eye on the lighting cause lighting is the key. I rather get the lighting right on hand than fixing it in post. Always capture with your heart and what you want. I find it easy when I come on set and I know what I want as suppose to not knowing what I want and I spend all the time trying to figure it out. Try to window shop other peoples work, specially the artist that inspires you. Try to mimic the lighting and you'll find out that you will end up with your own style. There are no right and wrong in being an artist but there is such a thing as laziness or procrastinating to do it some other day. Make sure if you want to achieve what you want to be is to just do it.
