Ancient Bristlecone Pineforest - CA
Most of these trees are 4,000 to over 5,000 years old. They are the oldest living organism in the world. The trees grow in soils that are shallow lithosols, usually derived from dolomite, sometimes limestone, sandstone or quartzite soils. Dolomite soils are alkaline, high in calcium and magnesium, low in phosphorus. These conditions tend to exclude other plant species, allowing bristlecones to thrive.
Keep in mind though... some chronologies reach beyond 9,000 years in this forest. Although the trees look dead, they are not, they are alive. Absolutely amazing.
