beautiful model but that tattoo is ugly and detracts from the beautiful form. This is not a tattoo shoot, is it?

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken during a lingerie shoot in a local hotel room, a pretty small space to work in, as I couldn't get the suite upgrade, that I really wanted. On reflection this shot could quite easily have been done in studio or pretty much anywhere.. The lighting used pretty much negates the background.

Time

We only had the afternoon to shoot, as the hotel booking was for a 2.00pm check in.. so we worked through our shoot styles until about 6:00pm and then time to leave. This one was mid way through the set. Could have been anytime of day as I used controlled lighting.

Lighting

One light only (quadra ranger) in a strip box was all that I used here, balanced to lose a lot of the ambient room light , but not all (i.e. not totally black). I was aiming at mimicking window light, as though Jenna had her back to the window, ( although the windows in these modern hotels are pretty small nowadays). Light was triggered by pocket wizard triggers and was sitting right of camera.

Equipment

Canon 5dmk3 , with 85mm F1.8 lens. Iso 200 1/100 at F3.2 shot in RAW. Hand held with quadra on light stand to camera right, triggered with pocket wizards. Lastolite hot rod strip box as light modifier to control light spillage.

Inspiration

Jenna's awesome ink ("Siren') just screams to be photographed and I wanted to get this image, along with her stunning figure and profile. Credit to Jenna's tattoo artist Max MacAndrews. I tried to keep it simple.

Editing

Yes lightroom, then into photoshop.. skin softening (not too much needed) then colour boost of the ink. basic sharpening, and crop.. I use Alien skin Exposure plug in too - its an amazing bit of software..

In my camera bag

For this type of portrait work either in studio or location shoots I pack the Canon 5d mk3 then probably my 85mm (f1.8) , 100mm macro and 70-200mm (F2.8) this pretty much covers all my work. I really like the longer lenses and the compression they give on portraits, the 100mm is a macro so I can get in close for detail shots, the 70-200mm zoom if I have the space to shoot in is an awesome lens. I'll probably have a 24-70mm somewhere in the case, if I find space is tight and I can't move about (zoom with my feet). I tend to shoot more with speed lights, so I'll have several in the bag (2 x canon and 2 x Yongnuo), but if I know the space I'm shooting in, I'll take the quadra ranger as a key light. I'm using strip soft boxes from lastolite on most of the lights, to control the light.

Feedback

As with almost any image, I always try to look and decide on what I'm taking a picture of. I then try to make sure I get that as the main focus of the image. this is done by a number of means, using good lighting, using depth of field and actual lens focus to be on the subject, and making the subject stand out from the rest of the image (decluttering the image). In this image I wanted the image / subject to be Jenna's stunning profile along with the phenomenal ink work she has..I think a photo of just the ink / tattoo would have been pretty flat and boring, so getting a side on look and profile adds to the image and gives more of a story to it.. here's a stunning woman with an awesome tattoo.. Using the controlled lighting, I have managed to hide the a lot of the hotel room (de clutter) but leave enough to give some separation and idea of being in a room. The posing was pretty easy as Jenna is a very good model, and does need a lot of direction.
