I took this photo at Hanging Lake, near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. I have hiked this trail nearly every year of my life and finally took a shot that comes close to doing the place justice. I am a self taught photographer, so it took many years to get to this moment! I am grateful for all the steps it took to get to this moment and look forward to all the steps in my photography future!Time
I took this photo around 5 PM on April, 27th, 2015. This is the reward after a 1.2 mile steep and difficult hike. It usually takes me a few hours for the round trip hike.Lighting
It is best to take photos during the morning or evening hours for the most gentle lighting around the lake and waterfalls.Equipment
This was shot on my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 with a tripod. This camera was a hand me down from my brother, but I used it for years and loved it until it quit working earlier this year.Inspiration
I have hiked the Hanging Lake trail nearly every year of my life. As a self taught photographer who has been taking photos since my teen years, I had taken many of this beautiful place in the past. I knew I needed to bring my tripod, have some patience, and use manual settings if I wanted to be more satisfied with my shots. I took the time and studied the lake this day from many angles. I got out my tripod, broke into manual settings, and captured this photo I love!Editing
I did a little editing with my windows photo software. In my camera bag
For years I had a Panasonic Lumix I took with me everywhere. It was a point and shoot camera with the ability to use some manual settings as well. A great camera for nearly any shot. Earlier this year, I purchased a Canon Rebel SL3 after my other camera quit working. I am loving this new camera so far! It is lightweight, easy to use, and takes high quality photos. I also carry a small tripod with me most places, as well as a lens cleaning cloth.Feedback
Hanging Lake is a beautiful lake sitting atop a cliff in Glenwood Canyon, near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It is at the top of a 1.2 mile trail which is very steep and difficult in places. Due to the worldwide popularity of the trail, it is now required that you buy a permit for the hike, and take a shuttle to the parking lot during the most of the year. Good shoes, water, and a snack are encouraged. Once at the lake, please be respectful of roped off areas that are off limits to help keep the area pristine. A longer exposure time and a tripod are good tools for shooting waterfalls. A time of day without too much bright light helps as well.
