Location
This photo was taken at the Vico View, a local beauty spot in south County Dublin frequented by locals and visitors, many from abroad. The fabulous view of Killiney Bay provides a fine background for photos of family and friends.Time
I take my cameras with me everywhere, always on the lookout for targets of opportunity no matter what the lighting conditions are like. The people in this photo arrived in their SUVs at the Vico View around 1.00pm on a beautifully sunny mid-February day. They spilled out of their vehicles and immediately began taking photos.Lighting
The Sun was low in the sky behind me to my right. This helped me close in slowly on the group from out of its dazzle. The group never saw me. The harsh lighting fell perfectly on them and seemed to enhance the bright, spontaneous and genuine joy of the group.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D3100 with a Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 pzd lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
People inspire me. I used to do a lot of landscape and architectural photography but everything now seems, for me, to boil down to people. In this photo I wanted to focus on the smiling faces of these beautiful, happy visitors posing in a wonderfully natural way for an unseen photographer. The woman behind the threesome adds a little additional action to the shot and her facial expression adds contrast. She also contributes some emotional tension to the scene by way of her physical distance from the smiling trio.Editing
My photos need a lot of post-processing since I shoot RAW in Neutral. I produced four different jpeg fine exposures of this photo on Nikon ViewNX2. In my photo editor I erased different areas of the various jpeg layers to get the best exposure. I also used Brightness and Contrast and Saturation Adjustment Layers. It was during post-processing that I thought the photo worked well in Black and White. In my camera bag
I think of myself as a photo soldier. I carry my Nikon D3100 with the Tamron superzoom and a Nikon D3200 with an AFS Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G in separate zipped-up shoulder camera bags with spare batteries, class 10 data cards, pens, notebooks and business cards. I dispensed with the factory issue Nikon camera straps and now use attractive, 40-inch patterned straps that don't scream 'Camera!' My backpack contains a Nikon SB-500 Speedlight, spare batteries, compass, Swiss Army knife, torch, lens cleaning kit, scarf, gloves, woollen cap, signalling mirror, an offsite pocket-sized 1TB Seagate, a sandwich and a half litre plastic bottle of water.Feedback
The main thing is not to draw attention to yourself. Don't wear brightly coloured clothes. Move normally as if you have no interest in the target and don't swing your camera about. Use cover if it's available. The Tamron 18-270mm superzoom gives me great reach and I use it as soon as possible to get the shots. My camera was preset on Manual for 1/1250 sec at f/6.0 so I didn't have to waste time fiddling about. The lovely scene in this photo broke up a split second after I took three shots. If you want the shot go get it. Do not hesitate.
