I took this photo of the Manhattan skyline from the Staten Island Ferry.Time
It was during the evening. The sky was just getting black.Lighting
I wanted the lights to be showcased. New York has the most beautiful night landscape in the world. As the sun goes down, the lights throughout the buildings really stand out.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon Rebel T3i. I didn't use a tripod.Inspiration
I really wanted a photo of the Manhattan skyline from the south end. The best way to get it is to take a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry. The Freedom Tower was being built during this time so I'm so happy to have it be part of this photo. It travels down to Staten Island from the south end of Manhattan Island. You can also get some great shots of the Statue of Liberty on the same ride.Editing
I used Lightroom to lessen the noise in the photo. I enhanced the contrast and black color to bring out the lights. I also used sharpening to bring out the detail in the buildings. In my camera bag
I do a lot of street photography, so I don't travel with a lot of equipment. I usually just have my Canon Rebel T3i, which has worked well for me. I bring a zoom lens as well. Traveling light is the key to successful street photos. You never have a lot of time to prepare. It's all in the moment.Feedback
For anyone wanting to capture the New York City skyline... evening shots and night shots really bring out the beauty in the city. During the day there tends to be a lot of blue tints throughout the sky. However, during the sunsets you get really beautiful orange colors. During the nighttime, you will get some really beautiful shots with all the lights on.
