Location
This was taken at Paddle Brave campground and canoe livery in Roscommon Mi. on the Au Sable River famed for it's fly fishing. The Mason Tract a short paddle from Paddle brave is considered the "holy waters" for fly fishermen and is beautiful wilderness destination.Time
I shot this in the evening as the sun was lower in the sky.coming through the trees.Lighting
The lighting on this was all natural, i waited until i had a lower sun angle to lengthen and deepen the shadows, yet keeping the a fair amount of highlights on the ends of the canoes.Equipment
I did use a tripod for which was the only piece of equipment i used other than the camera a canon 5d mark iii with a 24-105 f/4 l lens at f/14 1/15 iso 100.Inspiration
The inspiration for the shot was purely the shape of the stack with the upside down numbers, the the order and disorder at the same time, couple that with great light, couldn't resist.Editing
The post processing was very simple, all lightroom adjustments basic white balance, color adjustments first, convert to black and white, adjusted the colors for black and white, added some clarity and sharpening, and finished up with a a bit of vignette. In my camera bag
My bag is not for the faint at heart, 2 pro camera bodies 24-105 f4, 17-40 f4, 50 1.8, 70-200 f2.8, 600 ex rt, 430 ex ii, 2 sets of radio triggers, batteries, tripod, light stand, umbrella holders, umbrella, gels, gaffer tape, reflector, lens cleaning supplies, note pad, business cards, cigarette lighter, and this is just off the top of my head and not for a job but just going out to shoot for fun.Feedback
Advice for capturing something like this, pay attention to patterns. Look for patterns that have a pattern inside a pattern and that have some kind of a conflict within itself. Like this shot the canoes stacked have a pattern, all the registration numbers are upside down, this just adds a bit more intrest to the image. Shadows the shadows are what really in my opinion make this shot. The super deep deep dark shadows add a depth to the image that would other wise be lost if they were open eliminating the drama of the shot.
