Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Tromso North of Norway at 69° 40' 0" N / 18° 58' 0" E it`s north of the arctic circle

Time

This is one of my favorite Aurora photos. I hang out at night with my Doberman during winter, to do Aurora Borealis shoots. This picture is done between 2 am and 4 am , a spectaculare night. With strong Aurora storm and it was low .

Lighting

The night when I did this, was quite exceptional, the Aurora storm was big and low, with great light and movement. One of the wow nights. With clear sky and bright stars, the aurora didn`t move to fast, so I got time to make a move and put my tripod in the right position compose the 3d effect in the most possible way that i could. I did over 400 pictures that night and this one was the best after my opinion.

Equipment

I used a Benro ipod standing in the sea, put to the lowest point I could. With my Nikon D600 and Samyang 14mm on apperture F/2,8 - Iso3200 - shutterspeed 5/1 - remote controll. This is what I need to do Aurora pictures.

Inspiration

To do Aurora pictures, I always look for places with no city light or other "false" light, I like natural light and surroundings. I like to use the nature as it is. I had been to this place a couple of times, and did find it perfect for my night tours. I was lucky that night I got the perfect storm at the right place.

Editing

This is made in NEF / RAW. so I had to process the noise that is made with such high ISO. I haven`t done so much more with this, it was one of those perfect match, light and other things was in the right place at the right time.

In my camera bag

The first thing I put in my bag is the coffee thermos and chocolate in a cold night in the arctic you need something warm and suger to stay awake during the night. My Nikon D600. 3 memory cards and 2 batteries. my tripod is always int the car so is the remote control, It is a must when you do Aurora pictures. Movement in the camera is a no no Next thing I clean and pack is my Nikon 70-200mm lens and 14.24mm. This is the ones I use the most, the are superb in many ways, works as a pro. and you can do so many different photos with them. I have a 24-70mm That is a bag thing it always comes along but not that often in use. Earlier I used samyang 14mm lens it is a greta lens, but I switched it with the Nikon 14-24mm

Feedback

If you want to see and do Aurora Borealis. Put on warm clothes it can bee much waiting and the nights are cold. Something warm to drink and food is a good thing. A chair is not bad. some night it is several hours waiting for the light to sit a bit comfy can be nice. Find a location that has no city or false light, so you have only the Aurora and moon as light, Full moon in an Aurora storm makes it even better. since it is so dark at night and the moon give light in the nature around you, that makes a good effect. Up here in Tromso Norway we doesn`t have sun from november 27 until January 21. It`s dark day and night, so the moon is a great flash. Talk to the locals for tips where to go and ask for the way. Try to zoom in the lens in light, and lock it. to zoom in the dark is difficult. Do what ever you can do before you settle in at the right place, be ready with your gear. Put up the tripod when you get there with your camera on. When the storm starts you are ready to hit the remote. Try out the Iso in different numbers, sometimes the light is strong and you have to try out what Iso will be best so it doesn`t burn out the light. what speed you use depends on, the speed and light of the Aurora, try out several, until you feel satisfied With no moon Iso from 3200 - 6400 use to be the best, and catch the colors and light. In moonlight go for less ISO. Good luck hope you get o see it and get it on your camera, it is spectaculare
