Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the island of Oahu while I was on my honeymoon last October.

Time

It was about 6:15pm.

Lighting

One thing I love about sunset lighting is you never know what it's going to do the sky. I shot about 50 images during this sunset but this one sort of spoke to me because of how the sun changed the colors of the clouds.

Equipment

I shot this with my canon 7D and the 18-55mm kit lens. Nothing fancy here, just the basic stuff.

Inspiration

Well, I had never been to Hawaii before so I was very excited to see a Hawaiian sunset for the first time. I wondered if the sunset would be any more beautiful since I was in Hawaii, and it was breathtaking. Besides the beautiful colors and serine atmosphere, my inspiration was wanting to take home a piece of Hawaii for my wife and to have and remember for the rest of our lives together.

Editing

Just like with any other sunset image, you are going to deal with high contrast between the bright sky and dark shadows. So in post processing I raised the shadows a little so the lounge chairs would be visible, but I didn't want to image to have that over done HDR look so I didn't raise the shadows too high. I also sharpened and adjusted the black point.

In my camera bag

Normally I keep my nifty fifty, my 24-135mm, my 70-200, a speed light, batteries, batteries, and more batteries.
