Location
This photo was taken in the Julian Alps in Slovenia while returning from a trek, overlooking the Trenta Valley.Time
It was in early afternoon in late September, when you can still be surprised by an afternoon thunderstorm in the Alps. Exact time was 15:20 on September 19th, 2013.Lighting
Nothing specific as I made use of the natural light of that moment.Equipment
I had with me Canon 5D mk. II with EF 70-200 f2.8 lens and nothing else.Inspiration
Clouds were starting to roll in, making the sky a mix of dark clouds and rays of light coming down onto the picturesque alpine valley. The whole scene was just perfect for a photo.Editing
I shot in RAW to correct the small mistakes you make in the field. This shot was no exception: gradient filter was used along with highlight correction to compensate the overexposed clouds. In my camera bag
I'm a field biologist, so rugged and compact gear is a must. My standard gear consists of a Pentax K-5, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens, Sigma 180mm Macro lens and a Tamron 17-35 for wider angle shots. Complementing the setup (depending on the fieldwork specifics) are 400mm tele, a 55mm macro and a flashgun.Feedback
Slovenia is a small but beautiful country, where disappearing lakes, vast caves, ancient forests and majestic mountains intertwined with traditional rural countryside, historic castles and modern cities offer a great diversity of chances for landscape photographers. In the Alps one must be vary of ever-changing weather, especially in the summer and early autumn, but such things also bring out the most dramatic views.
