Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Holocaust museum in Berlin. A place I have visited many times and it never fails to move me. On this particular occasion I wanted to find a new perspective on it, something more positive, more hopeful, more inspiring. So I looked to the sky and found this new angle that filled me with hope. The negative space in the picture leaves room for new thoughts, for old memories, for smiles and tears. It took a long time to find the exact right angle that would give me the feeling I was after, but I think it was worth it.

Time

I don't normally shoot pictures with the sky in the middle of the day, but this was a no brainer, the texture of the negative space was an added bonus

Lighting

Not really, other than the diffused nature of the cloud cover helped with the contrast on the stone structure

Equipment

Bizarrely for me as a Nikon shooter, this was taken on a Canon G15. I was in Berlin for just 24hours on a job so didn't have my usual shooting kit on me. No tripod, the camera is on the floor (with a matchstick under one corner to level it. No flash

Inspiration

As I said earlier, it was a desire to find a new perspective on this place. I visit it every time i'm in Berlin and this was an opportunity to find a new angle.

Editing

I have a colour and a B&W version of this picture and I have never been able to decide which I like more. I posted the B&W one here maybe by chance maybe by design, who really knows? It is often the chaotic nature of photography that I like best, especially when I am shooting action/sports/events/street

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, D33200 and I carry about 10 lenses. 150-600mm. 135 prime, 35 prime, 50 prime, 24-70mm 8-16mm, 300 prime, 18-200 kit lens ( which I still love) 50mm and 80mm tilt shift and a 60mm macro. Three legged thing Jack tripod or a Manfrotto befree tripod, various remotes and flashes - (it's a heavy bag)

Feedback

have patience, the right emotional response to an idea, is rarely the first rendition. Give yourself options. Don't not take the shot - just because you don't have your primary kit with you doesn't mean you have to miss the shot. Have patience, oh yeah ... and did I mention ... have patience.
