Behind The Lens

Location

While sailing in the Bahama Out Islands in the late 1970s, we met some locals on a fishing dock. Some were buying fish and turtle meat while children played on the dock. This woman fascinated me. A lifetime lived, showed in her face. We struck up a conversation and she graciously allowed me to photograph her.

Time

We were at the fishing dock in the late afternoon. A couple of men were 'harvesting' a sea turtle they had caught. Locals were there to partake of the day's catch...

Lighting

The photograph was taken in natural light in the late afternoon.

Equipment

I used a 50mm lens on an old Canon AE1 using natural light and film. I shot with Kodachrome in those days and more recently, processed the image with Photomax for photographic balance, converting it to black and white then tweaked the image in Photoshop.

Inspiration

I was mesmerized by her...she was so serious, so poised and I felt as though her life, which I felt must have been difficult living on a remote island in the Bahamas, showed in that wonderful face.

Editing

I used Kodachrome and a Canon AE1 in those days which I had processed at Color Lab when I returned to the States. Years later I digitized the slide and used Photomax to process the image for balance, converting it to black and white to enhance the wonderful lines in her face. I've been taking photographs since the 1960s and have literally hundreds of thousands of digital and film images. I am slowly digitizing my film and slides on a Nikon Cool Scan IV,

In my camera bag

I've always used Canon cameras/lenses or a Hasselblad (for a short period of time). My Canon lenses ranged from 28 mm to 600 mm for my AE1. Today I use a Canon 20D with a 50 mm and 100 mm Macro lens; a 10 mm-22 mm, 18 mm-55 mm, 55 mm-200 mm, as well as the 50 mm that is standard with the camera. I also carry a Canon PowerShot SX500 IS 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 30x Wide-Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD for walk-abouts. I have extenders, filters, tripods and a variety of flashes also, but seldom use them.

Feedback

I photograph just about everything that catches my eye. I especially like natural light and love the darkroom. I literally had a darkroom before I had a camera. I printed old black and white film from old family pictures...today I use Photomax, Adobe's Lightroom and Photoshop to process and enhance my images. The darkroom taught me how to take photographs. My advice is to always have your camera with you and become familiar with it. And use it...often. Have a good processing system and learn the program. I 'grab' shots more often than not and while I produce many 'out of camera' images, I always explore further enhancement opportunities in Photoshop and/or Photomax. I'm not always sure what settings I have used...I do bracket for HDR, shoot JPG and RAW and I do use Auto. I often have to check the image history to see the settings that were employed when the image was taken.
