Location
This image is from Ladybower Reservoir in the Peak District in Derbyshire, England.Time
Frames for this were taken from about 12:30am over the following 90 minutes.Lighting
Mostly natural light, a few frames with torchlight for highlighting foreground elements.Equipment
Canon 6D Canon 16-35mm f2 Mk1 @ 16mm f4 Remote trigger Tripod Lens warmer powered from a USB battery pack. LED torchInspiration
I'd taken a long exposure a few years before, while walking the area in the midday sun. I always thought it would make a great star trails image, but it took a while for all of the elements to align.Editing
There would have been approximately 150-200 individual shots, edited in lightroom, to get the best out of the stars, then all of the shots, including the ones for the foreground, were stacked, blended together, and tweaked in photoshop to get the final result. In my camera bag
Canon 6D Canon 16-35 f2.8 Canon 24-105 f4 Canon 70-200 f4 Remote shutter NiSi V5 filter holder with CPL, 10 stop, and Natural Night filter. USB battery pack and lens warmer. LED torch. Extra camera batteries and Microfibre clothsFeedback
Mainly be patient, these aren't the quickest or easiest of images to create, but they are well worth the effort. Dont be afraid of screwing up, because you will. I have done, and I will do again, don't kick yourself because of it. Take some earbuds to listen to an audio book or podcast while the camera clicks away and you lie back and lose yourself in the night sky.
