Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at Ightham Mote in Kent.

Time

Around 4 o'clock when people were starting to leave and I wasn't going to be in anyones way.

Lighting

The sun was going down behind my left shoulder, its late in the day that this face of the building gets the light.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon 6D with a 17-40 f4 through a 10stop filter for 30 seconds.

Inspiration

I love long exposure photography. Capturing the movement of the clouds and the rustle of leaves breathes life into an image for me.

Editing

I process in monochrome to remove the distraction of colour and crop 16:9 for a cinematic feel.

In my camera bag

a wide, mid range and zoom lens, spare batteries and tripod. If I am shooting people I also pack flash heads, triggers and stands - my pop up soft box is wonderful for faking sunlight.

Feedback

Long exposures require patience, it means it is easy to get caught up in the technicality and forget about your framing and composition. Find your viewpoint first by doing a walk around and snapping on your phone, then you can set up your tripod and get into the tech stuff. Lots of places don't allow tripods - fill an old sock with dry rice to make a 'beanbag' you can nest your camera in. Use the 2sec shutter delay to avoid camera shake as you depress the shutter.
