Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a Californian Redwood forest near Beech Forest, in Victoria, Australia. This forest is one of the major attractions in the area and one of my favourite destinations on Cape Ottway, Victoria. The Redwood forest itself is surrounded by lush rain forest that is very prominent in the area. This is a truly beautiful spot to visit and photograph.

Time

The photograph was taken in the late afternoon so the quickly falling light presented an additional challenge to the usual low light conditions found in the forest.

Lighting

The forest has a magical quality to it. There is lots of shade with occasional areas that can be bathed in sunlight. Using low light settings and a tripod provided an advantage in achieving a shot that captures the magical mood and stillness of the forest. The natural lighting in this shot has been used to its best effect. I wanted to capture the light and shade whilst also preserving the natural colors.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D with tripod and 70-300 mm lens with a ISO of 640, aperture setting of f4, and shutter speed of 1/100. The tripod being an essential item.

Inspiration

I had been walking along through the forest with my daughter who is seen in the shot and had been walking ahead. Seeing her on the bank of the pristine stream with her reflection among those of the surrounding plants I wanted to capture the immenseness of the trees as they dwarfed her and the surrounding ferns. I wanted to capture the stillness and the isolation of this amazing place.

Editing

The image was processed from JPEG. I utilized photo editing software to fine tune the contrast, levels of light and shade, color and clarity. Processing was very minimal. I have kept the overall image as close to natural as possible.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon 7D with lenses: 17-70mm; 70-300mm; 10-20mm. Other equipment includes tripod, remote, lens hoods, and spare batteries.

Feedback

In achieving a capture like this it is important to pick your time of day in relation to lighting. Too early and the natural lighting will be too intense. Approach this photography with low light in mind in order to capture the essence of the forest and what it contains. Too late and you will miss the opportunity to play with natural highlights and shadows. Take care where you walk and how you pass through nature's garden. Absorb nature and let her inspire you.
