Location
I took this photo at the edge of a farm field full of potatoes near Aberdeen, Idaho. This was one of multiple sites I had to choose from.Time
I shot this photo on a chilly July 20th, 2018 morning. I caught things right as the sun was coming up over the horizon.Lighting
This is entirely natural light from the rising sun. I lucked into the cloud formations lighting up in that shape.Equipment
I shot this photo using my Nikon D7200 with my Nikkor 18-55 mm lens. I also used my Vanguard tripod with an Espod Plus 233 AP head to steady things.Inspiration
I took this photo because a client hired me to do so. I was aiming for another location that morning but the sunrise beat me to that location. Thankfully, I had alternates close by. I kept my eye on the rising sun as we drove. When I could tell we wouldn't make the first site, I had us pull off where I could capture this shot.Editing
During post, I needed to bring the highlights down and open up the shadows a bit. I also color corrected the plants and the sky to accommodate the client's wishes. They wanted a strong presence of green and blue where they could get it.In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D7200 rather permanently attached to a Custom Brackets Digital Pro-E flash bracket. I love the ease which this high end flash bracket allows me to switch from landscape to portrait mode on a tripod and back again. It makes life in the field so much easier for me. My go-to lenses are the Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens and a Tamron 70-300mm telephoto lens with 1:2 macro capabilities. These have served me faithfully for several years in photography. I also pack a Nikkor 50mm prime for those times when I need f/1.8 and a Nikon 60mm prime macro lens for when I want to go full blown macro on a photo. I also carry a Nikon Speedlight SB-700 for those times when natural light just isn't enough. My Hoodman hood-loupe, highly recommended by Scott Kelby, also goes with me. With it, I can see what my camera screen is showing me even in exceedingly bright light which would otherwise prevent me viewing my newly taken photos. My sling bag does get heavy with all this gear, but I know that I'm prepared for all kinds of photo opportunities.Feedback
If you want agricultural landscape photos like this, then you have 2 options: get permission from the farmer/property owner to come on their property and shoot, or shoot from a public place like the road or sidewalk. If you want to capture the plants flowering, do some research into about when they will bloom.
