Behind The Lens

Location

After hearing that a BAFTA winning artist had permissions to do a 3 night city wide laser show in my home city of Leeds (West Yorkshire, England) i jumped in a taxi down town with intent to shoot at all 7 buildings lit up throughout the city, This was my first point of call which is known as Bridgewater Place, a high end residential building in the city centre by the river Aire. This shot was on settings Aperture f/3.5 ISO 800 Shutter 8/10 Focal Length 180/10

Time

After setting up my tripod bown by the river it was already well after dark around 19:30 hrs. This well illuminated tall building was fairly straight forward to shoot and Bridgewater Place was successfully shot from different positions in about 40 minutes.

Lighting

With the directions of the roof top laser constantly changing i had to have a fairly quick shutter speed, but luckily the building is nicely illuminated making a night shoot of this site problem free, i was able to move on to my next laser building soon after.

Equipment

As this was a windless evening i only used my lightweight tripod with my normal Nikon D5200 body and a Sigma 18-300 which i have found on previous night shoots is not great in the dark , alas i don't own a dedicated lens for night shoots.

Inspiration

With everyone of my normal 2020 shoots cancelled, a chance of a free citywide nightshoot was very appealing as i was eager not to miss this local event. Prior to the shoot i mapped out all 7 laser buildings due to be used so had a rough idea of where to go and what to expect but was pleasantly surprised with the intensity of laser light.

Editing

Shot in RAW and lightly edited in Lightroom this shot required very little editing unlike most of my nightshots.

In my camera bag

Generally i do day shoots, but for this night shoot i travelled light with just a tripod, Nikon D5200 and a Sigma 18-300 in a rucksack as i went from building to building, Shooting in a busy city after dark could have been a problem if i was carrying an obvious camera bag. I felt that a normal looking rucksack would blend in more..

Feedback

Using press releases prior to the event i worked out roughly where and when to be, it pays to use press releases for that reason. Urban shoots can be fun but i'd advise photographers to travel in pairs whilst in the big bad city at night.
