Taken during our honeymoon, my wife and I got out and about in the Tasman Glacier region in New Zealand. Rains eased off for a few minutes and the sun poked through creating a beautiful rainbow in the valley.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Tasman Glacier region of New Zealand. My wife and I were on our honeymoon and naturally had our cameras along on each adventure.

Time

This was taken around 9.30am after an early wake up and hike. We were hiking up a trail towards a glacier and my wife yelled 'rainbow!'. I turned around and was blown away, and promptly took this image.

Lighting

We originally wanted to hike My Cook but that morning was extremely overcast, and all peaks were covered in cloud. It was also raining a lot so lighting was low and soft. The clouds opened enough to let the sun through and created this rainbow along with such beautiful difused light. It then disappeared again.

Equipment

I shot this on a Canon 80D and a Canon 24-105L handheld.

Inspiration

After my wife called out to me and I turned around, how could I not?

Editing

I did minimal work in lightroom. Mostly adjusted exposure, curves and pushed hsl around abit to bring out the earthy colours a bit more while maintaining the colours in the rainbow.

In my camera bag

Currently I'm rocking an EOS R, 80D, 24-105, sigma 18-35 1.8 and a sigma 50mm 1.4.

Feedback

I shot like this can't be planned. And it wouldn't exist unless we were out exploring landscapes in wet rainy weather. I guess the take home is unique photo opportunites like this can't be planned and won't happen unless you get out and put yourself in these unique locations in sometimes adverse conditions. Once you do this, just let the unexpected happen!
