Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home studio in DeFuniak Springs Florida, about midway between Pensacola and Panama City Beach.

Time

It was taken around midday. My daughter woke up craving brownies and just decided to make some. So, this shot was completely impromptu!

Lighting

This is all-natural light. My studio has an entire wall of windows facing north, away from any direct sunlight. Most people call it a sunroom but it is known as a Florida room here. The wall of windows is ideal for food photography, because of amount of indirect light. The brownies are backlighted with the windows in the back and white reflector card was used to bounce a little light into the front. It was that easy!

Equipment

For this, I was shooting a Sony A7 with an older Minolta 50mm macro lens with an A-mount and adapter for the A7's E-mount. No tripod. I shot this one handheld.

Inspiration

I was working on building up my food photography portfolio, but I had been concentrating on Asian foods. When I saw the brownies sitting out, I thought it would be a great opportunity to work in a "sweets" shot. So, I ran off to my studio with my daughter's freshly baked brownies and started shooting! Mysteriously, 2 of the brownies were missing from the pan when I returned it to the kitchen!

Editing

Yes. I always do basic editing in Lightroom to my photos. Ill adjust the white balance, and sharpen a little and sometimes crop it. In this case I didn't crop it, but I adjusted the shadow slider to bring out a little more of the brownie details.

In my camera bag

I shoot real estate, primarily, so in addition to the Sony A7 in my pelican case, I also have a Sony 24-240mm, a Sony 16-35mm as my primary real estate lens. I keep the Minolta 50mm macro I used for the brownie shot on the adapter for any macro work and a new Viltrox 85mm 1.8 prime for any portrait or headshot work. Since I'm mostly mobile, I carry a lighting kit in a second case with a Godox ad200 lighting system and a few Yongnue speed lights.

Feedback

Play around with the light and the angles you shoot at until you find what you like. Shoot a little wide to give context to the shot, but also move in and fill the frame. I've found that if I try to show too many items in my food shots, it can be distracting. The shots that have worked the best for me are closer in and sometimes only show a portion of the food.
