Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was take n in my home studio in Salzburg,Austria. It is part of an ongoing project I started of ballet dancers both in the studio and on location.

Time

It must have been taken late morning or noontime.

Lighting

I used the large window light coming into the studio from the left of me and accentuated it with an Elinchrom Strobe on low power to light up the dancers face and figure. On the opposite side of her I placed a large riund reflector.I us

Equipment

I used a Nikon D4 with a middle range zoom,24-70 mm,2.8 and one Elinchrom Strobe with a 70cm square shaped soft box with double diffusion. No tripod.

Inspiration

I love dance especially ballet and see it as art in motion or living art.The movements flow past the viewer in performances and I feel compelled to capture these exquisite poses for people to see again and again. It is a tribute to dancers and their amazing mastery.

Editing

I did color toning of the image to bring in the blue green hues as the backdrop was dark grey.I also did some minimal skin retouching.

In my camera bag

Nikon D4 and D750 and the 3 zoom lenses with 2.8.Macro ,85mmand 50 mm lenses. In addition to Elinchrom strobes and modifiers in the studio I travel with 2 nikon speedlights 910 ,pocket wizards foldable 5 color reflectors a monopod and an ice light.

Feedback

Keep it simple .Often less is more and window light can be gorgeous if you don't have strobes. One strobe can be enough .Diffuse the lighting as much as possible to let light and shadow mold the figure beautifully.Get it right in camera and limit post production.Be inspired!
