Behind The Lens

Location

The New Forest in Hampshire.UK. An area of outstanding natural beauty where horses and deer roam free. There are thousands of acres of woods and heathland that, early in the morning are devoid of people.

Time

This was taken at dawn. You often get a low mist at this time and it's when I take most of my shots.

Lighting

Dawn in the New Forest is either stunning with the sun breaking over the tree tops. Often a low mist settles which gives the place an 'other-worldly' feel. It's a real gamble getting up early to shoot though because being in Britain, it's more often than not really cloudy, dark, raining and miserable!

Equipment

I used a Fuji X100F. A small mirrorless camera.

Inspiration

The nature around me in The New forest. It's hard not to find horses wandering around this area. But like humans, some horses are attractive and others are not!. This horse had a great look with very photographic eyes.

Editing

No. I just balance the colours in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Just my small Fuji camera with a fixed 23mm lens.

Feedback

Get up early. Be patient (and not afraid of horses). Horses are strange creatures to photograph on a wide angle lens like mine. If you go too low, their noses get too prominent and if you go too high they lose their presence. Trying to get a horse to look up from munching grass is the biggest challenge i have - i find the first few seconds of taking shots are the best when they are intrigued by me and my camera - this doesn't last long and then they just go back to eating!
