Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my home studio.

Time

It was mid morning and I used the natural light combined with a diffused strobe to emphasize the gown and flowing material of the ballerina.

Lighting

My idea was to keep the lighting looking natural despite the strobe used and also let the background go dark so as to give the impression that the dancer was walking away from the viewer into an undefined space and lend the image a sense of mystery.

Equipment

this was shot on a Nikon D4 with a 24 -70 MM 2.8 lens. I used an Elinchrom 250 watt strobe on the side of the window with a softbox feathered away from the dancer.

Inspiration

I was inspired by my love for classical ballet and the opportunity to photograph this professional ballerina. In doing so I was aware of how the seemingly simplest of poses holds a great deal of grace and beauty and by photographing the back view of the dancer heightens the symbolic meaning of the image, in this case the act of leaving which could be in a multitude of life situations.

Editing

I do editing on the background and I also did a very subtle toning .

In my camera bag

I have my D 4 as well as my D 750 which I use for traveling and as a second camera for jobs. I also have a wide angle, a 24-70 and a 70-200 mm lenses , all 2.8.In addition I have a 50 mm 1.8 lens, an 85 mm 1.8 lens, and a 105 mm 2.8 macro lens for portraits or details I carry Magmod modifiers, pocket wizards and Nikon 910 flashes as well as Lastolite stands and softbox just in case light needs to be enhanced.

Feedback

My advice would be to practice and study images of professional dancers in order to capture what they would consider to be the best moment of capture. I enjoy learning more about the technique aspects of dance.
