Location
image was made at Ft. Drum, Watertown, NY during a snow storm in the field.Time
The image was taken early morning right before a combat patrol exercise.Lighting
Light was extremely soft but the tree created a nice shadow. The softness of the light is due to the even sky coverage by the storm and the super large reflector created by the snow all over.Equipment
Nikon D90, Nikon 18-105mm handheldInspiration
This is part of a series I was doing to document the way of life and living conditions of our Soldiers. From the training exercises at home base to the combat theater and overseas assignment our Soldiers endure living conditions that most people can't even begin to imagine. They do it all not because that heat those they fight, but because they love the ones they leave at home, our way of life and the flag they defend.Editing
There was not much post processing. Developed the RAW file on Adobe Camera RAW and adjust the white balance to mute the blue cast. Then converted to B&W and adjusted the shadows to smooth them just a touch. In my camera bag
At that time in my camera bag I used to carry a Nikon D90, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, the 18-105mm kit lens, a 70-300mm, a speed light, tripod and cleaning kit. Now I go out with a Nikon D750 and a D7200, the 50mm, a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8, 90mm f/2.9 and my all around Nikkor 28-300mm. A flashpoint zoon Li-Ion Speedlight, tripod, ND filter set and extra batteries.Feedback
Take the right gear for the job and nothing else. Dress appropriately for the weather conditions, be aware of the situation and fallow the light.
