Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in southern Iceland, more precisely from the cliffs of Dyrhólaey.

Time

That day, as any other day of the trip, we woke up one hour before sunrise to check the weather conditions. Incredibly, luck was by our side. The sky was covered by big dark lenticular clouds, showing their shapes thanks to the very first lights. So we packed our gears as fast as possible and drove to this place we scouted the day before.

Lighting

The sunrise was just out of this world! Colours were powerful and vivid, yet very strange. It looked like the light was bouncing back up in the sky after hitting the water, creating some purple hues that you don't usually see at this stage of the sunrise. I couldn't believe my eyes but I kept shooting and shooting for about two hours. Icelandic light is so amazing.

Equipment

Nikon D810 + Nikkor 80-400 + Manfrotto Tripod

Inspiration

Being in such an incredible place, with such incredible weather conditions has been one of the best experiences of my life. The inspiration is just coming from living these moments.

Editing

Yes of course. The processing of this image was long and tedious because being one of my favourite images of the trip, I wanted it to be just exactly as I wanted it. The editing of this image involved raw processing and panorama blending in Camera RAW, luminosity and color correction using manual selection and luminosity masks on Photoshop, and last thing: a good sharpening in the web export.

In my camera bag

The equipment I have in my bag is very basic: D810 + nikkor 80-400 + nikkor 14-24. Manfrotto Tripod, 5 batteries and cleaning cloths for the gear.

Feedback

Always try to think about making a panorama. The inclusion of something out of the classic format will make you bring home different compositions than anyone else.
