Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken in Peyia ( Paphos region ) Cyprus on the way out to Seacaves.

Time

I have visited this place a few times before on trips to Cyprus, so arriving early evening to look for some good compositions before sunset.

Lighting

After setting up and finding the compositions i wanted it was just a matter of the waiting game, the sun to start setting and the clouds to move and make the most of the light as it faded. I took a number of frames in different locations to get the best out of the sky.

Equipment

Taken using a Canon 5D mk3 fitted with my Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM lens. I also used a lee medium 2 stop nd graduated filter to calm down the highlights in the sky. All mounted on a tripod

Inspiration

I have visited this location before on my trips to Cyprus and being my own worst critic i am never happy with some of the shots i get so I'm always looking to improve on my images so going back to this location to watch the sun setting over the wreck and the Mediterranean is amazing to watch and photograph at the same time.

Editing

Processed using Adobe Lightroom i did very little to the image just adjusted the highlights and shadows and gave it a little vibrance

In my camera bag

The first thing that goes in my bag is obviously my camera body ( Canon 5D mk3 ) and as i shoot mainly landscape on my travels i pack my Canon 16-35 wide angle lens to capture the big pictures and my Canon 70-200 lens to get some close up shots. I will also have a selection of Lee graduated filters , circular polarising filter and my nd filters for some long exposure shots. Always carry my tripod on my bag to enable a steady camera for sharp images.

Feedback

Always try to plan your landscape shots, i use google earth on my mac to look at some locations before hand, check weather reports and tide times if your shooting at the coast i also use a couple of phone apps like the photographers ephemeris and photo pills to check locations and positions of the sun at certain times of day. Arrive at your location with plenty of time to spare so you can get set up and find some good compositions then as with nature you can't control the weather so its a waiting game for the right light and conditions and if you don't get the shot you wanted this time revisit the location again
