Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during a photo weekend with extremely little sleep at the Lake Ammer / Bavaria / South Germany. The goal was to shoot 3 sunsets and 2 sunrises. This one I shot at sunrise the first day.

Time

To explore the spot really well and to discover I've already arrived a Tasg earlier. Here I discovered this magnificent jetty. So I got up at 4 o'clock in the morning to capture all lighting conditions.

Lighting

Especially during sunrises, weather conditions and lighting conditions can change very quickly. Especially with long-term exposures, therefore, a certain amount of experience is a great advantage. So I can respond quickly to changing conditions and do not need endless minutes for my setup. By doing so I can capture all the lighting moods.

Equipment

I normally use a NIKON D7200, two or three wide-angle lenses from SIGMA. My favorite is a 10-20mm SIGMA lens, a SIRUI tripod, a PLUTO trigger, and a set of different ND & GND filters from HAIDA and also a HAIDA polarizer.

Inspiration

Oh it's just wonderful to be outside in nature. Here I get completely clear of the head and I love the slowness of the long exposure. especially in our hectic and fast time it is simply wonderful. During taking pictures I'm totally in here and now! I try to capture this mood and the special moment with my pictures and try to pass them on to the viewer.

Editing

Yes. I shoot in RAW format and edit my pictures with Lightroom. I want to show the moment and the real mood not to alienate the picture. So, for example, I do not use "clarity" or "remove haze". Instead, I am a big friend of admitting white and black. The processing should not last longer than 10 or 15 minutes. I'd rather spend more time outdoors and take pictures than sitting at the computer.

In my camera bag

One NIKON D7200 & a NIKON D5600. Four SIGMA lenses (10-20mm / 17-50mm / 24-105mm / 18-300mm), a PLUTO trigger, a pano gear, a tripod, and a set of different ND & GND filters, four batteries for the cams, 4-5 SD cards, 1-2 batteries for the trigger, a towel and the most important thing is a little chair to rest :D.

Feedback

It is very important to have a close look at the spot beforehand! It just does not work if you come one hour before sunset and do not know the spot. Until you have found the right motif and set your setup, the best light is already gone and will not come back. Look at weather reports and study the clouds over the day. This helps you with your planning. Do not be put off by "bad" weather. Go out in any weather and take pictures. There is almost no bad weather for the photograph. Take your time and be patient. Do not rush. But extremely important are empty memory cards and full batteries!
