Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a trip to Antarctica in Dec 2016. I can't remember where exactly, but it was a day when the ship stopped to take the zodiac boats out amongst the ice bergs.

Time

It was light almost 24hrs a day so that time wouldn't have made all that much difference. I think it was taken some time in the afternoon

Lighting

The lighting was purely luck and depended on the weather at the time I came across the penguins and position of the boat I was on

Equipment

The Nat Geo cruise had equipment that could be borrowed, this photo was taken on the 5D which was the first full sensor camera I'd used. I have now purchased one. It was taken from a small zodiak boat so hand held.

Inspiration

The groups of penguins were amazing, you could point s camera at anything and end up with really interesting subjects

Editing

I cropped the photo a bit and touched it up to get rid of some red penguin poop that was distracting but that was about it.

In my camera bag

Now I carry a canon 5d mk4 with two lenses, 16-35 and the 24-105 f4. Plus other stuff like cleaning wipes spare batteries. I have a dji mavic drone I sometimes carry

Feedback

If you even get a chance to go to Antarctica you should take it. It is very expensive but was truly an amazing experience. The scenery was like nothing else I'd ever seen and there was never a shortage of stuff to photograph
