Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Phippsburg, Maine. My Dad's side of the family had a cabin on a bay up here, and I am lucky enough to visit some summers. I have to attempt a sky trail photo each year since my interest in photography began.

Time

This photo was taken last summer in September. I was pregnant with my first baby, a newlywed, and my parents flew us up here for our wedding gift. We arrived pretty late that night and after everyone went to bed, my husband and I laid on the fishing dock for 2 hours taking this photo in the middle of the night. It was absolutely freezing, but it is one of my most cherished memories with him.

Lighting

I had attempted sky trails twice before this photo. Before I knew of two techniques, but this attempt I was more aware of how the earths polarity affected the photo outcome. I was very pleased!

Equipment

I used my canon 5d mark II, a canon 16-36 2.8 wide angle lens, and a camera clicker to try and keep the camera as still as possible. That's it. No tripod was used, I actually used fishing rope to tip the lens up a little bit.

Inspiration

My love of nature, water, Maine, night time, photography, being a perfectionist (I had to outdo the photo from the previous year, of course). Other photographers as well, of course.

Editing

Yes. I tried another technique which just leaving the shutter open for the same amount of time, but didn't have as sharp of results. This one is a photo every 30 seconds, for an hour and a half, then layered in photoshop.

In my camera bag

Everything if I can bring it! My carry on to this Maine trip was so heavy! Ha. My must haves are obviously mj camera (5d mark II), my absolute favorite lens my 70-200 2.8 II, my 50 1.4 prime, my 100 2.8 prime, my 24-70 2.8.

Feedback

Research a little for confidence, and keep trying! My first attempt was really weak. You can only get better!
