Early July, I captured these guys hanging out enjoying the sunset and beautiful weather. Not the most technically correct image, but I liked how it captures the spirit of youth and nature blending. Summer and the Fourth of July.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Laguna Beach,California, right around the 4th of July a few years back.

Time

Right about sunset I had headed down to the tide pools, hoping to get some good sunset color in the reflection in the pockets of water, when a group of of youngsters passed me by and headed out to the rocks between me and the pending sunset. They were carrying old glory with them. They started jumping around, having a good time while taking photos with their phones. I shifted from my original plan, and just started shooting them. walked away with some nice shots as the sun began to set. one of my favorites is this one, captured as the group paused for a moment to enjoy the sunset with our flag. A goose bump moment.

Lighting

I shot this with only with available light, since the group was so far away, and it was not planned at all. back lit by the setting sun and clouds.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my old Canon 50D, Tamron 70-300 mm lens, and a very crusty Bogen Manfrotto 3221 Tripod.

Inspiration

This image was not planned. The situation was totally happenstance, and was shot on the fly.

Editing

Very little. Some shadow and highlight adjustments were made in PS Light Room.

In my camera bag

I always have the basics in my bag. Tamron 70-300mm,Canon 50mm 1.8 for close up and portrait photography, Tokina 11-16 2.8, and Canon 28-105mm USM for mid range, I also keep Hoya polarizers and HD Neutral Density filters, because they work well. Along with a couple of Yongnuo flashes and triggers and some gels for creative lighting. Pretty much it. Basic and simple. I find that the less I have in my bag, the better. Know what you have in your bag, and become proficient with it and you'll be fine.Nothing real fancy.

Feedback

Get out there. It's great to have a plan or an idea of what you want to capture, but always keep your eyes and mind open to your surroundings, but most of all, try not rush yourself, breath, take in the scenery. We sometimes travel great distances to get the shots we want. Enjoy the experience, then seize the moment
