Location
Mono Lake,Ca. near lee ViningTime
I was set up at this location for about n hour waiting for the first light of the early morning.Lighting
I knew that the lighting on this part of the tuffa of MonoLake would change so I had my camera and tripod set up for my composition. As the it changed I captured certain parts that were changing with the light , such as the dramatic sky color, golden light of the sun on the tuffa, and lighting on the inside for more detail in the shadowsEquipment
This image was shot with my first digital camera, my canon XTi and 18-55mm kit lens. I used an inexpensive polarizer to capture the sky color and to capture some"pop". There was no flash used in this image When I shoot at these wide open outdoor locations I use an older Manfrotto tripod. Heavy but very sturdy.Inspiration
I have seen so many beautiful images of Mono Lake and have been in the area many times. I had always wanted to go there and have the opportunity to create an image that was truly my own.Editing
Yes. Post processing in in photoshop was necessary to blend all of the different dynamic light ranges that were captured to put this image together. No HDR software was used. Lightening and blending layer modes in PS worked well for this process. In my camera bag
Canon 50D, Tamron 70-300mm, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 24-105 USM, Canon 18-55mm lenses. It is important for me to have polarizers, ND, haze and UV for each of these lenses and a red filter in case I see a situation that I know I will want process in black and white. Extra memory cards are a must and a clean micro fiber cloth that I try to keep with me at all times. Extra batteries, and my Canon XTi as a back up so I can try to keep from changing lenses in the fieldFeedback
Of course being there during the magic hours helps, it is not always necessary. try to plan and think about what it is you are tying to accomplish with your images allow yourself time once you get there. I like to allow myself time to enjoy wherever it is that I go to shoot to enjoy it it and relax and get the "feel" of where I am, Afterall. Enjoying the beauty is what it's all about. Seize the moment.
