Location
I took this photo at home, right after finishing my lunch. The scene took place in the kitchen as you can see from the background.Time
It was after lunch, so I would say that most probably around 12:30 to 1PMish.Lighting
The kitchen has windows facing to the East and to the West so you have pretty much great light all-day long. As this was around noon or so, the natural light was even from both ends of the room. I don't use artificial light in my photos yet. I haven't learned how to use it.Equipment
I used my IPhone 6 Plus for this take. You never know when your dog is going to "perform" in front of you, so the IPhone is a great tool, with a decent lens, and always available for a quick capture.Inspiration
Jax, my beloved boxer, is capable of a thousand expressions, the subtlety on how he plays with his eyebrows, the dilation of his pupils, even his smile, or ears placement, or the tilt of his head made one want to spend a lot of time capturing them all. As many dogs, and boxers in particular, Jax has always room for extra food. Funny enough, he's allergic to red meat, but that doesn't stop him to try to get a bite out of a steak. We are not big red meat consumers at home, but when we do, we are extra careful with our four-legged friend.Editing
The only thing I remember working on, was on a selective focus, for two reasons: first, I wanted the attention on Jax' expression, and second (also important), the kitchen was a mess...In my camera bag
Of course I always carry my IPhone 6 Plus, but when I want to take it seriously, my equipment of choice is a Nikon D5300, and most of the time I bring two lenses, 18-55mm and 55-300mm. It's pretty basic equipment, but as I started taking photos last year, is more than enough for now. I may want to add a third 50mm lens for night architecture, and portrait photography in the future. But that's about it.Feedback
With this type of photography, as with anything that happens unexpectedly, reaction time is all that matters, hence the cellphone camera that shortens the setup time to almost zero. Also believe it's important how comfortable the pet (a dog in this case) is in front of a camera. I had many dogs since my child, but never saw one as comfy as Jax in front of the lenses. It gets to a point that if I try to take a picture of someone else around, he will try to get in the shot... I like to sing to him Carly Simon's "You're so vain" theme. I think he gets it. If the pet is okay with someone pointing a lenses, then I say, just hit it, and play with it. You'll be surprised by what turns out.
