Location
In front of our home where we have a gardenia bush.Time
Around 5pm ESTLighting
The sun sets at the back of the house so when I shoot in the front I get very even light that is beautifully and naturally diffused.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D610 using a 50mm 1.8 Shutter speed was 1/125. F-stop was 2.2 and ISO was 200 No flashInspiration
I was actually challenged by a friend on Facebook to do 5 days of b&w photos. This was the photo from day 3.Editing
Yes, I shoot in raw so I added sharpening and a little more contrast. I converted to b&w using a few different steps. I used a gradient map to turn the photo b&w as well as b&w filters to enhance freckles and at the very end I added sharpening to eyes and freckles one last time.In my camera bag
Nikon D610, as well as a few crop sensors. I use my 50mm 1.8 as well as my 85mm 1.8 most of the time. I have a 55-300mm that I really love when I have great light and a wide angle 18-105 I use mostly at weddings for large group shots.Feedback
Lighting is a huge factor, you need great even light. A shallow depth of field is also essential to a photograph like this one. Give your subject some distance from your background but don't allow for too much space between you and your subject. It was difficult to get a genuine smile from my son so I had him look up then down, left then right and back at me. He felt so silly by the time his eyes were back on me he was starting to laugh and that's the photo I used.
