Location
This photo was taken from Winter Hill Lookout Port Lincoln Eyre Peninsula South Australia looking South East to Cape Donnington.Time
This would be one of the best captures in a long time, I called a fellow photographer warning him of the possible light show heading our way, I started shooting towards the SW to W at 9pm and followed the storm for the next 6 hours to the NW then N then to the NE and E and finally the SE, it was slow moving but as lightning is 'not predictable' I was waiting for the ultimate shot. The time I spent was worth the effort.Lighting
The distance from Winter Hill lookout to Cape Donnington is around 15km 'as the crow flies' and I estimate that the strikes could have been a further 20km out, the light was iridescent, mesmerizing, and clearly showed Boston Island and the King fish farms in the foreground. This is one that didn't get away.Equipment
I am currently shooting on a Canon EOS 700D - I bought it as a twin lens kit last last year. The settings I was using were F6.3 8 secs ISO 200 at 55mm I was shooting on my 55mm to 210mm TelephotoInspiration
I have always be around storms and lightning which stems from being a 27 + year volunteer with the South Australian State Emergency Service. I was always amazed by the raw power of something so natural but so dangerous. We have have another lightning season in late November December so hoping to capture multiple strikes within a cumulonimbus cloud over Port Lincoln.Editing
The only post processing I did was to crop the left hand side as the photo was too dark and brought up the contrast slightly due to the distance away.In my camera bag
I have the standard twin lens kit, 18mm-55mm, 55mm-210mm I have a UV and polarized filters not much at all,Feedback
My general rule of thumb is F6.3 to F8 ISO 100 to 200 5 to 8 secs if the lightning is consistent. In the future I would like to purchase a remote but on this night I set my camera to take 5 shots for the first 4 hours and then I manually shot for the last two, patience is the key you just have to drink lots of coffee and keep on shooting. You will succeed!
