Behind The Lens

Location

Aspen Colorado, well just outside of it actually. On the way up Independence pass.

Time

Taken in the late afternoon on my way home, I saw this in my rear view mirror first actually. From there I pulled over and ran out into the middle of the road!

Lighting

It was slightly overcast, which helped. Otherwise the sun would have been beaming back at me and the contrast may have been too much!

Equipment

This is handheld, taken with a D7000 and a Nikon 18-105 lens. Zoomed in to 85MM, this helped compress the vast landscape.

Inspiration

Taking my break away looking in the rear view mirror of my car, this long stretch was just picturesque, no pun intended.

Editing

Yes! This was brought into lightroom and the color was balanced, from there into photoshop to remove some pesky power lines, and bring in the blue tint on the mountain. Adjusting the shadows up was key, otherwise the gold in the trees would not have been as vibrant.

In my camera bag

I have actually switched since this picture was taken to all Sony. I love my A7II, it is light, compant, and takes killer images! Full Auto it impressive, but Aperture mode is where I live. 90% of my images are taken on a wide angle 16-35 soyn zeiss lens, and then i break out the 70-300 occasionally for long range landscape images. I really enjoyed this switch as I am now shooting full frame, and getting the benefit of some high quality glass!

Feedback

Often you think you need a wide angle to capture EVERYTHING! but, you don't. When you are in a vast landscape, zoom in and you will be surprised what you find :)
