Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot at Beardsgard Barbers in Batavia, Illinois. It is a super cool, locally owned barber shop that not only gives great shaves and haircuts, but offers products to maintain a great beard and hair for men, and trains future barbers as well. The whole shop has a retro and slightly "geeky" flair. The shop itself was almost as inspiring as my subject.

Time

This was shot around 3 or 4 in the afternoon during the summer. Had we been outside, the light would have been something to contend with, but inside this barber shop, the natural light through the windows provided all the light I needed.

Lighting

This was shot 100% with available light. There were a few lights inside the barber shop, but most of it was the natural mid-day light through the front windows.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D800 body with a Sigma Art Series 24-105 mm lens. No flashes, no strobes. The Sigma lens is my favorite lens. I call it "Delicious"

Inspiration

Scott, my barber subject, had just finished barber school. The following week from when this was shot, I was to shoot his wedding to his husband, Ben. They had expressed an interest in doing some wedding photos of Scott giving Ben a shave. I thought that this was a FANTASTIC idea, but might be tough to fit in on the actual wedding day, so I suggested we do a pre-wedding shoot of it at the barber shop. After we finished those photos, I wanted to document this amazing time in Scott's life and get a great photo of him that he can look back on with pride knowing that it was taken right after he finished barber school and so close to his wedding day.

Editing

I used Lightroom to post-process this one. I don't think I used photoshop much if at all. I muted the tones and added sepia to give it that "Old-timey" feel even more.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Nikons D800 and D300 bodies. Also, I carry the Sigma Art lens as well as a Nikkor 50mm prime lens, and a 70-200 lens. I usually have one speedlight and plenty of memory as well as 2 backup batteries for each body.

Feedback

Really get to know your subject. One of the reasons I think this image speaks is because I knew Scott fairly well by the time I shot this. I knew what would be important to him at the shoot, and I knew what expression of his I was looking for. I saw the light, I saw the background and it all just came together. Also, don't be afraid of post-processing. If it lends itself to what you want to express in the image, I say, it's all art.
